At least 15 persons were killed and several others injured when a flyover, which was under construction, collapsed in Hyderabad on Sunday evening. The police put the death toll at “five to six”. The injured were shifted to the nearby Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). The dead include some of the construction workers at the site.

A length of about 70 metres of the Somajiguda-Nagarjuna Circle flyover caved in after a heavy downpour and crashed to the left side of the road flattening cars, autorickshaws and two wheelers. Two Infosys employees, Aman and Ankit, who were in a cab, were trapped. Aman was rescued and has been sent to NIMS. His colleague was still to be rescued.

Heavy rain had lashed the city since evening, and this may have led to the collapse. Considered one of the most modern flyovers, its construction was given to Gammon India. The flyover is in two parts—from Green Lands Somajiguda and from there to Nagarjuna Circle over Punjagutta centre.

Officials fear that since the slab had come off longitudinally, the remaining part may also cave in.
