In a shocking incident, the city police today arrested a minor girl in connection with the murder of two sisters here on the night of February 12.

Khurda SP A.K. Sarangi said Swarnalata invited her classmate Archana Ranasingh to her house in Baramunda on the pretext of her birthday. Archana along with her cousin sister, Lopamudra (7), visited on the evening of February 12. Swarnalata is believed to have then persuaded Archana and Lopamudra to accompany her to a nearby market to buy some imitation ornaments. On the way to the market, she is said to have murdered the two girls.

The motive behind the killing was found to be sheer jealousy and an urge to exact revenge. She thought Archana was good-looking compared to her, she wore gold ornaments and better clothes. Besides, Archana often behaved with her in a high-handed manner, the SP said.

Swarnalatha had been put through a lie-detector test earlier and had passed. After a police dog led them to Swarnalata’s house, police searched it and seized blood-stained clothes of the girl and the knife used for the crime. On further interrogation, Sarangi said, Swarnalata confessed to the crime.

Swarnalata’s mother Sanchala was also arrested as she had reportedly tried to hide her daughter’s ‘‘crime’’.
