A sessions court today granted interim anticipatory bail till March 31 to 13 policemen in the case of alleged custodial death of POTA accused Khwaja Yunus.

Sessions judge Pratibha Rasal granted the anticipatory bail to the 13 policemen, who were attached to the Crime Branch’s Ghatkopar unit in 2003, after they claimed they were not involved in the alleged assault on Yunus in custody.

According to the police, Yunus—charged with engineering a blast in a bus in suburban Ghatkopar on December 2, 2002—escaped while being taken to Aurangabad for investigation. However, co-accused Dr Mohammed Mateen Basit told the POTA court that Yunus was assaulted by the police during interrogation and that it resulted in his death.

Nine other policemen have been granted interim anticipatory bail by the sessions court till March 31.
