Panaji, Sept 26: Over 1200 nominations have been received for the October 15 elections to the 11 municipal councils in Goa even as the deadline for filing the papers expired today, official sources here said. The filing of the papers began on September 15 for the 11 of the 13 municipal councils in the state going to the polls.The scrutiny of the documents would be held on September 26-27 while the last day for withdrawals is September 29, sources said. The counting of the votes would take place on October 16at the taluka headquarters of the respective civic bodies.The municipal councils going to the polls spread across North and South Goa are - Mapusa, Bicholim, Valpoi, Pernem, Canacona, Cuncolim, Margao, Sanguem, Cacora-Curchorem, Quepem and Marmugao.They together have an electorate strength of around two lakhs.Elections to the Panaji and Ponda municipal councils would be held next year when their five-year term expires.The elections to the civic bodies and the panchayats in Goa are held on non-party basis but invariably the contestants find support of the political parties.
