CHANDIGARH, March 6: The host 12 Wing outplayed 9 Wing via tie-breaker to lift the trophy in the Western Air Command Inter-Wing football tournament which concluded at 12 Wing Stadium here today. The teams were locked 1-1 each during the regulation period.

Players of both the teams made desperate attempts to score in the dying minutes of the stipulated period, but the goal was elusive and the encounter was dragged onto the extra time. Even the extra time failed to break the deadlock as teams failed to score a golden goal. However, to decide the winner, tie-breaker was applied to, which could be dreaded even by the toughest of teams.

Abhro Bhattacharya placed neatly in the far left corner of the net to give 12 Wing a 2-1 lead. However, when Anjan Sarkar missed to convert the first spot kick for 9 Wing, the game seemed to slip out of their hands.

But in return, Satish Babu, who took the fourth attempt for 9 wing, kicked straight into the hands of Ravinder Mann, which probably marked the end of the duel as Raghubir Singh in the last attempt made it 5-3.

Thereafter, 12 Wing made desperate attempt to gain the upper hand, but lacked finishing touch to score a match winner. Twice, Abhro Bhattacharya’s close range shot sailed over the bar and just before the long whistle Raghubir’s shot hit the crosspiece and went out of play.

In the extra time 9 Wing’s defensive tactics thwarted 12 Wing from scoring the golden goal.

Air Vice Marshal, TM Asthana, Air Officer Commanding, Advance Headquarters gave away the prizes to the teams.
