Twelve labourers were injured when an under-construction bridge caved in at Kasegaon village on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway (NH-4) in Sangli district on Thursday afternoon. The bridge was being constructed on a stream and was part of the Golden Quadrilateral project.
Two of the injured are in a critical condition. A major disaster was averted as the labourers — 50-60 in number — working at the site were having lunch when the mishap occurred.
Deputy Collector Uttam Patil said the bridge was being constructed by Andhra Pradesh-based Vyankatesh Rao Construction Company. The slab had already been laid on some part of the bridge, and the reinforced cement concrete structure was being erected on the remaining portion.
When the RCC structure and the slab caved in, the labourers were trapped under the debris. In a two-and-half hour rescue operation, gas cutters were used to get through steel and pull out the trapped labourers.
Patil, tahsildar Amit Deshmukh and sub-divisional police officer Sarang Avad supervised the rescue operations. A team of medicos was also summoned from the rural hospital at Islampur for medical aid.
