Members of two Muslim sects, the Deobandis and Barelvis, clashed in slum colony here, leading to rioting and injuries to more than 12 people last night. Nearly half a dozen shops were ransacked, police said.

Both the sects had been at loggerheads over the control of a mosque in Lohianagar slum colony since the last two years. An agreement was reached for the mosque to be used by members of both the sects. But members belonging to both the sects attacked each other with lathis, swords, iron rods and knives following a petty quarrel between children.

Police force was sent to stop the riots and a contingent of PAC was stationed in Lohianagar in view of the prevailing tension, said Ajay Rautela, SP.
