JANUARY 8: In a quick follow-up on Thursday, the crime branch detained 11 suspects in connection with the murder of Lalit Shah on Wednesday.

Speaking on the progress of the investigation, Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Ranjit Singh Sharma said the suspects are being questioned and there is a strong possibility that they could provide vital clues in solving the case. The police are trying to establish the motive behind the murder, added Sharma.

Gangster Arun Gawli’s associate Lalit Shah was shot by a gunman on Wednesday at his Matunga residence. Shah later breathed his last at LTMG hospital, Sion.

Senior inspector N P Tambvekar attached to the Matunga police station said that the assailants could be among the three suspected groups of Aswin Naik gang. A 9 mm pistol was used to commit the crime, confirmed Tambvekar.According to crime branch officers, Shah’s murder might have been triggered by his close association with Arun Gawli. Shah was earlier arrested for threatening a Colaba hotelier and forcing him to visit Arun Gawli at Amravati Jail last year.
