ROOPNAGAR, June 18: At least 100 schools in the district go without proper buildings, boundary walls and ceilings for the want of funds.According to a report, prepared by the local Education Department, both middle and high-level schools in various villages in the district need a minimum of Rs 3.32 crore for renovation and construction work. The school buildings at these villages, which are otherwise being looked after by the panchayats, have now been recommended to be taken over by the PWD for maintenance. The report, which was sought by the deputy commissioner, will be tabled before the district planning board next week. The report reveals that 29 senior secondary schools, 64 high schools and 40 middle schools urgently need repair. The district administration would seek the required funds on the basis of these findings and will recommend that these be handed over to the PWD, like many other school buildings in the district.Interestingly, there are 86 school buildings in the district, which are already under the charge of the PWD. Though these too need an immediate repair at an estimated cost of Rs 1.18 crore, the Planning Board could not offer much to the Education Department.Of the total requirement, the department has so far received only Rs 15.40 lakh in May last. The District Education Officer Gian Singh confirmed that owing to fund scarcity, the authorities could not do much and the meagre amount was now being spent on providing drinking water in only 62 schools.Even as some of the school buildings in the district are declared unsafe, the planning board is yet to sanction the remaining amount. According to Gain Singh, the case is being pursued with the board in this regard for the last two and a half years.
