Eight policemen were arrested in connection with the escape of ten undertrials from their custody on National Highway No-8 at Vasad.
Eleven undertrials were on their way to Ahmedabad after appearing in a local court at Halol in connection with some loot case on March 26. They requested the eight accompanying policemen to halt the police van at Vasad as they wanted to answer a nature’s call.
However, when they stopped some undertrials accompanied by four police personnel got down and started beating them with the handcuffs. The others, who were in the van also beat up four policemen inside the vehicle.
Ten undertrials, noted criminals from Dohad district in Gujarat and Jhambuva district in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, managed to run away while one undertrial was caught.
Despite police teams being dispatched to various places and alerting the Madhya Pradesh police in this regard, none of the ten undertrials has been arrested so far.
A case was registered against the eight policemen accompanying the undertrials, Bhadarva police officials said.
