One person was killed and 12 others were injured in a grenade explosion at the commercial centre of Lal Chowk this afternoon. Many people had thronged the busy market for Id celebrations.

Police said unidentified ultras tossed a grenade at a BSF picket near Amirakadal Bridge but the device missed the intended target and exploded on the road. One of the injured identified as Ranbir Singh, a resident of Amritsar who was working as a watch mechanic at the shop of a Delhi businessman, succumbed to his wounds, police said.

Police said the blast did not cause any panic among the people present at the Chowk as children were bursting crackers to mark Id. In fact, the commuters could hardly differentiate real fire from cracker shots. Security has been beefed up in the city following the attack.
