Dera Bassi, August 2: Seven men, believed to be labourers from Uttar Pradesh, broke into a house in Saraswati Vihar on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway in the wee hours today, injuring one person and decamping with jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh.

The seven were equipped with lathis and rods.

Police have registered a case on the basis of a statement by Subhra, daughter of house-owner Ishwar Dayal. Dayal is admitted to PGI due to prolonged illness and his wife and son were with him at the PGI when the incident took place.

Subhra told police that the men disconnected the telphone, but she managed to inform their neighbours, Amrik Singh and Bittu, soon after the robbers entered her house. "They came and challenged the robbers and Bittu was injured in the ensuing scuffle," she added.

She told Newsline that she could identify the robbers if they were brought before her. She also accused the police of taking time in reaching her house even though a police post is located nearby.

Meanwhile, the Dera Bassi police have rounded up nearly 150 labourers for questioning. The police claim to have recovered some clues in the form of chappals and a dhoti which they say could help them nab the culprits. The police, however, ruled out the involvement of Kale Kachhewale, the highway robbers in commando uniforms, in the incident.
