Waste dumping site at Thane’s Atkoli to be converted into green patches

As part of waste handling protocol, each dumped layer will be covered with soil, followed by application of odour-control and germicidal sprays. Tree plantation will follow once the base layers are stabilised, said the TMC officer.

Key infrastructure plan includes a protective boundary wall across the site with a 2.5-meter strip along the border earmarked for bamboo plantation, internal roads, security rooms, sanitation facilities, and plantation zones.

According to TMC officials, 12 acres will be used for waste sorting, while 10 acres will be allocated for grass cultivation.

An access road of 150 meters, a 250-meter sewer line, and essential civic infrastructure like toilets and administrative spaces will also be developed by TMC’s Public Works Department.

“The commissioner has instructed departments to complete land leveling, wall construction, and forestation work within a fixed timeline. He also directed the Solid Waste Management Department to manage odour and operational disruptions through regular monitoring and control measures,” added the TMC officer.

The authorities have laid thrust on setting up power supply connections and other measures to ensure that daily waste transport does not cause inconvenience to residents.

In addition to the bamboo buffer, green islands will be developed throughout the site during the monsoon season. Green belts are also planned at the site entrance and near local offices.
