The ambitious bullet train project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be completed by 2028, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Monday.
During the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, the bullet train project was put on hold indefinitely, bringing the work to a standstill in Maharashtra.
Expressing disappointment with the MVA government’s decision to stop the project, Fadnavis said, “When you have a mega infrastructure project worth Rs 70,000 to 80,000 crore, the delay leads to cost escalation. The rate of interest also rises. It is the state government which has to bear the financial burden.”
At the same time, the ongoing work in the neighbouring state of Gujarat continued unhindered. “They are now way ahead of us in the project. But after the Mahayuti government came to power, the project was expedited,” Fadnavis told reporters in Mumbai.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, which was approved a decade ago has been under construction. The project, when completed, will help operate trains at a speed of 320 km per hour. There will be 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar and Boisar in Maharashtra, on the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad stretch.
