Do all pets need a rabies vaccine? We ask the experts
Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best rabies vaccination schedule for your pet.

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans and is spread primarily through bites or scratches from infected animals. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent its transmission and is a critical public health measure. However, is it important for all pets to get a rabies shot? Indianexpress.com spoke to experts and found out.
J S Rama Krishna, Business Head at Carniwel, points out that irrespective of whether it is a community animal or a pet, it is our responsibility to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies. This ensures that there are no health impacts due to rabies, and aggressive behavioural changes that could lead to biting are curtailed.
Dogs, cats, and ferrets are the primary pets that require rabies vaccination. “These animals are considered high-risk because they frequently interact with other animals, and then humans. This makes not only the animal susceptible to contracting rabies but also the humans they interact with. In many parts of the world, dogs are the main transmitters of rabies to humans, making vaccination a legal requirement in most regions,” he explained.
Dr. Ishan, Petcare Pro Clinic, Pune said that all dogs, cats, and ferrets, regardless of their lifestyle or environment, should receive the rabies vaccine. “Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is primarily spread through the bite of an infected animal and vaccination is the most effective way to prevent rabies in pets and protect human health.”
He added that the following animals do not require rabies vaccination:
– Small mammals like hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits.
– Reptiles and amphibians.
– Birds.
– Fish.
However, it’s essential to note that while these animals do not require rabies vaccination, they may still require other vaccinations and health checks.

How often is it necessary to administer this vaccine on them?
Dr Ishan said that the frequency of rabies vaccination depends on several factors, including:
– Age: Puppies and kittens typically receive their first rabies vaccination at 12-16 weeks of age.
– Location: Pets living in areas with high rabies incidence may require more frequent vaccination.
– Lifestyle: Indoor pets may require less frequent vaccination than outdoor pets.
Typical rabies vaccination schedules include:
– Initial vaccination: 1-2 doses, 3-4 weeks apart, at 12-16 weeks of age.
– Booster shots: Every 1-3 years, depending on the vaccine type and local regulations.
Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best rabies vaccination schedule for your pet.
