Who doesn’t want long, healthy, and shiny hair? While some home remedies may work, the role your diet plays cannot be overlooked. To help you make informed choices, Roshni Chopra teamed up with her nutritionist, Neha Sahaya, and asked her a few tips for good hair growth and delaying premature greying.
Sahaya suggested the following measures:
*Include a mix of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and flaxseeds with a seasonal fruit in your diet, or make a ladoo with dates. These are rich in essential nutrients that promote hair health.
*Have soaked walnuts and almonds on an empty stomach to stimulate melanin synthesis,
*Have a glass of vegetable juice or a salad made from curry leaves, cucumber, beetroot, lemon, or amla with a drop of olive oil or coconut oil. This will increase the nutrients in your body and boost hair growth, said Sahaya.
*Use fenugreek seed oil: Add fenugreek seeds (methi dana) to cold-pressed coconut oil and apply it to your scalp for two hours. “This mixture can help nourish your scalp and promote hair growth,” said Sahaya.
*Make sure to include Greek yoghurt, sattu powder, or an egg in your diet to improve your protein intake, which is essential for strong, healthy hair, noted Sahaya.
The key to healthy hair is to eat balanced and healthy meals, said Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chembur and Criticare Asia Hospital, Kurla. “Your food choices have a significant impact on the way your hair looks. If you regularly have packaged, processed, and street food, you may experience many hair problems because of deficiencies,” said Dr Chause.
To fix this, ensure you eat well-balanced meals that consist of equal amounts of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, iron, and zinc. “These nutrients can make your hair healthy and luscious,” said Dr Chause.
Some people frequently wash their hair with sulfate and paraben shampoos, “which can strip away its moisture while preventing it from producing natural oils. Gently massaging your hair with a little warm oil once or twice a week can be helpful,” said Dr Chause.
Dr Chause also emphasised on the various essential oils like rosemary, chamomile, coconut, and lavender oil to improve hair growth. “Massaging your scalp can increase blood circulation resulting in stronger and nourished hair. Individuals are advised to regularly brush their hair with an appropriate hairbrush. This can help prevent your hair from breaking and getting detangled,” said Dr Chause.
Building a personalized haircare routine can work wonders in achieving smooth and shiny hair. Consult a dermatologist to determine your hair type and ask for effective and better haircare products tailored to your hair type, texture, and needs.
