Dr C Satish Reddy, Consultant Pulmonologist at CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad, highlighted the serious health implications of exposure to pigeon droppings. These droppings contain proteins that can trigger an immune response, leading to a range of respiratory issues.

Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis: Prolonged exposure to pigeon droppings can cause this inflammatory lung condition.

Allergic Reactions: Individuals with allergies may experience symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

Respiratory Infections: Bacteria and fungi present in the droppings can cause respiratory infections.

Chronic Respiratory Conditions: People with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma may experience exacerbated symptoms.

Protecting yourself from pigeon-related illnesses

To safeguard your health, Dr Reddy recommended that it’s crucial to implement preventive measures:

Avoid Direct Contact: Minimise contact with pigeons and their droppings. Wear gloves and masks when cleaning up after them.

Maintain Cleanliness: Regularly clean areas frequented by pigeons, using disinfectants and water. Avoid sweeping or vacuuming as this can spread contaminants.

Improve Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in areas prone to pigeon infestation to reduce the concentration of airborne particles.

Deterrence: Employ bird netting, spikes, or other deterrents to discourage pigeons from roosting or nesting.

Regular Health Checks: If you’re frequently exposed to pigeons, schedule regular check-ups to monitor your respiratory health.
