Have you ever wondered why recovery looks different for people suffering from the same illness? Taking to X, Dr Sudhir Kumar, consultant-neurologist with Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad shared that the possible reasons for such differing outcomes could be:

1. Those who are fit and healthy prior to the illness recover better and faster,
2. Those with positive frame of mind recover better,
3. Those with strong and better family support recover better,
4. Those who trust and have full faith in the treating team tend to do better.

We asked experts to shed light on their take on the potential reasons and here’s what we found.

Dr Nasiruddin G, Consultant-Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road shared that recovery from illness varies due to factors like genetics, age, health, lifestyle, socioeconomic status, mental attitude, stress, and healthcare access, with individuals having strong support networks often recovering faster.

Agreeing, Dr Basavaraj S Kumbar, Consultant- Internal Medicine, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru said that while two patients may be diagnosed with the same illness, their recovery process is likely to differ quite significantly given the diverse factors including genetic factors, existing ailments, general health status, lifestyle or even attitude.

As an example, a person in good health may recover from a viral infection more quickly than a person who has an illness that makes them have a reduced immunity. “Young age also is an important consideration- in general, younger people are able to recover more quickly because their body usually is more resilient. Mental state and stress levels have a bearing on the recovery too, though they are secondary to the physical factors,” he said. The healing process may be prolonged since stress inhibits the immune system.

What can people do to ensure better and faster recovery?

To ensure better recovery, taking proactive steps is crucial, including adhering to treatment plans, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, getting adequate sleep, practicing stress reduction through meditation or yoga, building a support network, staying mentally positive, setting realistic goals, seeking second opinions, and staying informed.

Dr Kumbar said that diet and nutrition are essential in recovery, and people who focus on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet often recover more efficiently. “The amino acid protein helps restore tissues lost during illness, while vitamin C and D boosts the immune system. Drinking adequate fluids should not be ignored as it enhances blood circulation and hastens cell repair,” he added.

Bad eating patterns practice like high sugar and high processed content can deter faster healing.

Physical movement and exercise—within limits, of course—can speed up recovery. For example, in people recovering from certain surgeries or respiratory infections, simple movements help maintain circulation and prevent muscle atrophy. “Movement promotes better healing compared to prolonged bed rest. For those who are bedridden, guided physiotherapy can keep muscles active and improve blood flow, which supports faster recovery,” said Dr Kumbar.

Consistency in medication, rest, hydration, and follow-up care make a huge difference in ensuring a smooth recovery. Reducing exposure to new infections by practicing good hygiene can prevent setbacks.
