Anuradha Gupta, crowned Mrs World International 2024 in June, has opened up about her win. “I signed up on a whim. There was a lot (to be done) to get to that point, and a lady named Alpa guided me. She changed my perception of life and always questioned me asking ‘why not?’. That’s when I decided to go to Delhi and meet the other contestants. There were 138 of us. I walked into a room with strangers. It was a beautiful experience. Every single one of them was there for a purpose. They were there for the coveted crown. I felt that in that space, everybody was vulnerable,” said the winner, who is married to filmmaker Sanjay Gupta.
Anuradha added that the win made her realise “the power of being one’s authentic self.”
She also mentioned how weight has been a constant struggle, especially in her head. “Of course. I always did (had a weight complex). I think I was born weighing 45 kilos (laughs). And it doesn’t help when everybody around you is calling you fat. Even when I was the thinnest at 19 and won the Miss Smile Contest, I was fat in my head. I was always fat in my head. Though the struggle continues, I am more comfortable with myself now,” Anuradha, 50, said.
Growing up with weight issues can be an emotional and physical challenge for many children and teenagers. Whether it’s due to genetics, lifestyle, or a combination of factors, weight issues often affect self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being, said Dr Samant Darshi, consultant psychiatrist, Psymate Noida. “However, with the right strategies and guidance, it’s possible to foster a healthy relationship with food, body image, and fitness. Experts emphasise a holistic approach to overcoming these challenges,” said Dr Darshi.
People have unique body types, medical histories, and sensitivities. “What works well for one person may not be as effective for another. It’s essential to pay attention to how you are feeling and seek help as soon as possible,” said Dr. Darshi.
Dr Darshi shared that open discussions about body image and teaching children (and adults) to focus on their strengths rather than physical appearance can go a long way in boosting confidence. “Overcoming weight struggles during childhood requires a supportive environment that emphasizes balanced nutrition, enjoyable physical activity, and mental health care. With proper guidance and a positive mindset, children can develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime,” said Dr Darshi.
