Masaba Gupta returns to workouts post ‘terrible bout of food poisoning’; how soon is it advisable?

Fashion designer Masaba Gupta is extremely dedicated to her work and workouts. But just like everything else, sometimes too much strain does take a toll on one’s health. Masaba too opened up about getting back to her fitness routine post a ‘terrible bout’ of food poisoning.

“The only way to get my brain and body back in place after a terrible bout of food poisoning. Workouts are my ‘secret sauce’ especially ahead of a night shoot,” Masaba expressed on Instagram Stories which shows her lifting light weights to do weighted lunges.

Is it advisable to workout post food poisoning?

Eating contaminated food takes a serious toll on our health and it is best advised not to workout in any form without proper recovery, shared registered dietitian Garima Goyal. “Though exercise boosts the body’s immunity, it is not recommended when you are sick. So it is best to take a break and not push the body,” Goyal mentioned.

Anyone with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea should avoid working out, further added Dr Priyanka Rohatgi, chief clinical dietician, Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore.

Notably, food poisoning or acute gastroenteritis leads to loss of fluids and electrolytes.

“Exercise can cause the body to lose water through sweat. Your gastrointestinal tract may need time to fully recover, and it can take as long as a week to get back to your normal appetite and digestion. Carbohydrates will be easier to digest in the initial phases of recovery,” mentioned Dr Rohatgi.

Post recovery, one can start slow with exercise, asserted Goyal as she shared other measures to keep in mind.

Always listen to your body – This will turn out to be the main cue so that your body and mind both are in tune, mentioned Goyal.

Slow down your pace – Whenever you feel like resuming back to your normal life, take it slow and reduce the duration and intensity of exercise, especially if you feel you have less energy than usual days, said Goyal.

No exercise if there are symptoms below the neck – Any sickness involving symptoms below the neck such as diarrhea, vomiting etc. implies that your body is fighting infection and will be benefitted if you don’t exercise, rather allow it to rest, said Goyal.

Be patient – It may take a few weeks for you to resume the workout with the same intensity and duration. “So be patient with your body. Avoid overexertion during this time and stay well hydrated,” said Goyal.
