Fortunately, I'm in the hands of experts who performed keyhole surgery and I'm now recouping. It's rest and physiotherapy ahead for a couple of months." Laparoscopy: Keyhole surgery that uses small incisions and a laparoscope to provide images from any part of the body is called a laparoscopy. Parathyroidectomy: This procedure is the removal of the parathyroid glands using keyhole incisions. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS): For VATS, the surgical team inserts a small camera called a thoracoscope and small instruments through keyhole incisions in the chest to perform surgery on the lungs, esophagus, and chest. By utilising small incisions and a miniature camera called an arthroscope, we can visualise, diagnose, and treat various joint problems, said Dr Himanshu Mathur, senior consultant, Joint Replacement and Head of Department Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery, HCG Hospital, Ahmedabad. "This minimally invasive procedure allows us to effectively address issues like torn ligaments, cartilage damage, and joint inflammation," said Dr Mathur. Dr Mathur also mentioned that patients benefit from smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain, faster healing, and quicker return to normal activities. What is the recovery process like? According to Dr Palankar, it depends on the complexity of the surgery. "It could range from less than 24 hours for daycare procedures to two weeks for major and complicated surgeries. The hospital stay can be prolonged in the event of untoward complications," said Dr Palankar. According to Dr Mathur, while recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and individual factors, keyhole surgery offers the advantage of shorter rehabilitation periods compared to traditional open surgeries.
