Gown and Out

Gaurav Gupta’s “Silt & Cipher” managed to create an impression at Amazon India Couture Week.

His signature sari gowns and lehenga gowns dominated the range, as did the shoulder knots and Grecian drapes. Signatures apart, Gupta deserves a pat on his back for experimenting with dupion silk, a fabric he rarely uses. The sheer volume of the gowns and the petal-like hemlines were the highlight of the collection, as were the clean cuts that one has come to associate with him.

The colour palette comprised shades of white, blue, wine, peach, silver, nude and gold. He also used net, organza, lace, silk georgette and silk chiffon. Metallic gloves by Outhouse Jewellery, and glittery make-up added to the powerful look that Gupta was trying to create, with his bold slits on saris, and structured shoulders on jackets.

Over time now, Gupta has managed to create a very strong signature in the industry, and while it reflects in his collections, it also reeks of repetition. His muse, actor Kalki Koechlin looked the dullest of the lot, in a drab baby pink layered gown.
