THE SUPREME Court Tuesday issued notice on a plea seeking directions to social media platform X and the official handle of Assam BJP to take down a video, which, it alleged, “depicts the takeover of Assam by Muslims if the BJP doesn’t remain in power”. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued the notice on a plea by journalist Qurban Ali and Senior Advocate Anjana Prakash and posted the matter for hearing on October 28. Appearing for the applicants, Advocate Nizam Pasha said the “video has been posted as part of upcoming election” and “it openly targets, vilifies and demonizes Muslims”. “It shows people with skullcaps and beards…,” he said, adding that a suo motu case ought to have been registered in keeping with the top court’s earlier directions in petitions against inflammatory speech. According to the plea, “A video has been circulated by the BJP Assam Unit on 15.09.2025 on its official X handle ‘BJP Assam Pradesh’ showing a grossly false narrative that depicts the takeover of Assam by Muslims if the BJP doesn’t remain in power in Assam. The video depicts the consequences of a change in the present ruling dispensation and inter alia shows visibly Muslim people (wearing skull caps and burqas) taking over tea estates, Guwahati airport. The video further shows illegal migrants who are visibly Muslim coming into Assam. and finally, that the state has 90% Muslim population.” “As the ruling dispensation, BJP-Assam is bound by the Constitution of India and thereby is bound to uphold the secular values that form part of the basic structure. The video circulated by its official handle openly targets, vilifies and demonizes Muslims. on the assurance that if the BJP is voted into power the state would be saved from the same, support is being sought,” the plea said.
