Nearly six months have passed since several Indian wrestlers levelled allegations of sexual misconduct against the outgoing Wrestling Federation of India Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. While an FIR has been filed against the BJP MP, no legal action has been taken so far.
The wrestlers had met with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on June 7, who had reportedly assured them of a speedy police investigation into the matter. The Union Minister had set June 15 as the deadline for the completion of the probe.
The Delhi Police is expected to file the chargesheet in the sexual assault case today.
Several wrestlers, led by medallists Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia had camped at Jantar Mantar in May, demanding Singh’s arrest. The protests had escalated after top athletes were manhandled and detained by the police while marching towards the inauguration of the new Parliament building in Delhi on May 28, after which they had travelled to Haridwar in a bid to dispose of their awards in the Ganga.
