The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an intense spell of rainfall is likely to continue over south peninsular India, Konkan and Goa today (July 6) and over Gujarat on Friday and Saturday.
In a press release, the weather department said that light or moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Konkan and Goa, ghat areas of central Maharashtra and Gujarat during the next five days. Isolated extremely heavy rains are also likely over Konkan and Goa. Meanwhile, central India is likely to witness light or moderate widespread rainfall. Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are likely to receive isolated very heavy rainfall.
Red alert for Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra’s Raigad
After heavy rains lashed several parts of Kerala leading to waterlogging, uprooting of trees and damages to buildings, red alert was sounded in three districts including Idukki, Kasargod and Kannur. The IMD has issued orange alert for the remaining 11 districts, ANI reported.
Emergency Operation Centres have been set up to review the situation and several teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in sensitive areas. Revenue Minister K Rajan chaired a high-level meeting of district collectors and other revenue officials and Rajan urged people to remain cautious.
The weather department has also issued ‘red’ alert for Goa, predicting heavy rains, inundation in low-lying areas, uprooting of trees, building collapses and short-term disruption of essential services. Two helplines and control rooms have been set up. On Wednesday, the coastal state recorded 76.7 mm of rainfall.
A red alert is also in place for Raigad district in Maharashtra, with IMD warning of excessive rainfall. “The average rainfall in Raigad district for June was 655 mm. This year, the district recorded 70 per cent of the average rainfall at 459 mm. In the first four days of July, 188 mm of rainfall was recorded,” officials told PTI.
Orange alert for coastal Karnataka
An orange alert is in place for coastal Karnataka with a forecast that Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts will receive heavy rainfall till July 8. Schools, anganawadis and pre-university colleges were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday in Dakshina Kannada district.
Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain expected over Delhi
Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain are expected over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and isolated places of (Burari, Model Town, Karawal Nagar, Delhi University, Civil Lines, Kashmiri Gate, Seelampur), NCR (Loni Dehat) for the next few hours. Meanwhile, light to moderate intensity rain will occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and isolated places of (Dilshad Garden, Seemapuri) over the next two hours.
One killed in Punjab; Ludhiana records highest rainfall
Meanwhile, several parts of Punjab also received heavy rains on Wednesday. PTI reported that a man was killed and three people were injured following the collapse of a factory shed near Dehlon area. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana (Central) Rajesh Sharma told PTI the victim was identified as Surinder Kumar, a native Dirmarbhar village in Uttar Pradesh.
Apart from that, flash flood was reported in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district destructing about 10 houses in Haroli area. No casualty was reported. Meanwhile, a 40-feet wide breach happened in Kandi canal at Chakrota village in Punjab amid heavy rains. A car was washed away in the strong water currents and no loss of life was reported.
According to the IMD’ Chandigarh centre, Ludhiana recorded the highest 103 mm rainfall on Wednesday between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, followed by 80 mm rainfall in the Balachaur area of Nawanshahr district, 64 mm in Ropar, 47 mm in Jalandhar, 40.5 mm in Ferozepur, 33.5 mm in Gurdaspur, 21 mm in Patiala, and 18.5 mm rainfall in Amritsar. The remaining parts of the state also received rainfall ranging from 10 mm to 17.5 mm.
