A poster war began in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal Friday after pamphlets surfaced in several parts of the city describing former chief minister Kamal Nath as “Corruption Nath” and tagging him as “Wanted”.

The posters carry QR codes and claim Nath is wanted in several scams in Madhya Pradesh. Late in the evening, rival posters targeting Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and listing out his share of alleged corruption cases surfaced across several walls in the city. Photographs of these posters were shared by the Congress.

Nath defended himself and said the BJP is a corrupt party. He said, “No one can humiliate me and there is no case of corruption against me, everyone knows this. They (BJP) are putting up posters and are not ashamed of resorting to such low level politics. This is evidence of how corrupt they are. You should listen to what their senior leaders say about them.”

Nath said corruption has become a part of the BJP culture and that he doesn’t need certificates from the saffron party.

“Every single BJP leader is caught in corruption. No corruption can take place in the state until the chief minister participates in it. From the panchayat to the mantralay, they have created a system of corruption (in every place). Give money and to get work done, this has become the government’s slogan in the state,” Nath said.

Former Congress minister P C Sharma has filed a complaint at the Chuna Bhatti police station alleging that a “serious crime has been committed by defaming the honour and dignity” of Kamal Nath.

Congress’s complaint read, “Due to wrong, misleading posters against Kamal Nath with the aim of harming his dignity, a situation of anger and resentment has arisen among the general public of the state. Today, some posters and pamphlets have been found pasted in Chuna Bhatti area, in which untrue, false and defamatory allegations have been made by propagating false and defamatory allegations.”

However, since the complaint was not registered as an FIR, the Congress party said it will approach the local court seeking directions to register the FIR, the party said in the statement.

Meanwhile, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra has called the posters a result of discord within the Congress party. “Remember ‘Phata Poster Nikla Zero’? My Congress friends should think before going to the police station (and find out) whether someone known is behind the posters (slamming Nath),” he said.

The Congress party has been attacking the BJP government over corruption allegations for some time now. On June 12, while launching the Congress campaign from Jabalpur, senior leader Priyanka Gandhi had attacked the government over a list of scams in the state. “There is scam after scam in Madhya Pradesh — ration scam, scholarship scam, Vyapam scam, recruitment for police scam, electricity department scam, Covid scam, e-tender scam. It’s such a big list of scams, it’s bigger than (Prime Minister Narendra) Modiji’s list of insults,” she said.

Some noteworthy cases that Nath is vocal about is the alleged scam in the state government’s Poshan Aahar scheme, the nursing home scam in which over 90 fake nursing colleges were derecognised for violation of norms, alleged corruption in the construction of the Karam Dam, in which cracks developed in August last year but repair works are yet to begin.

Last month, when six Saptarishi idols collapsed at the Mahakal Lok corridor in Ujjain due to the high speed winds, the Congress went on the offensive and alleged that the BJP has not even spared god and said it built the idols with cheap materials which is a sign of corruption.

The latest charge of corruption levelled by the Congress party is over the fire which broke out at Satpura Bhavan this month in which several government offices were gutted. The Congress party alleged that the offices contained important files concerning corruption cases in the state.
