Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 150th birth anniversary: PM Modi unveils stamp, coin; Amit Shah flags off ‘Run for Unity’

President Droupadi Murmu offered floral tributes to Sardar Patel at Gantantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan and extended her greetings, describing Sardar Patel as “a great patriot, visionary leader, and nation-builder.” Posting on X, she said, “He accomplished the historic task of unifying the country through his unwavering resolve, indomitable courage, and adept leadership.” His dedication and spirit of national service, she added, “serve as an inspiration to us all.” The President urged citizens to “unite together and resolve to build a strong, harmonious, and excellent India” on National Unity Day.

Run for Unity

Flagging off the the ‘Run for Unity’ at New Delhi’s Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Today is the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, it is a very special day for us. On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, PM Modi decided to celebrate it in a grand manner.”

“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was not given enough respect by the Congress government of that time. Sardar Patel was awarded the Bharat Ratna after a delay of 41 years. Neither a memorial nor a monument was built anywhere in the country, it was only when Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat that he conceptualized the Statue of Unity and built a grand memorial in Sardar Patel’s honor.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called Patel “the sentinel of India’s unity, the architect of an undivided nation, and the great freedom fighter,” offering “millions of salutations” to him on his 150th birth anniversary. “Heartfelt greetings on National Unity Day,” the party said in its message.

Congress pays tribute to Patel

The Congress, too, paid homage to the former deputy prime minister, describing him as the “Iron Man honoured with the Bharat Ratna”. Sardar Patelji’s contribution to the country’s indivisibility and unity will be remembered for centuries, the party said.

The Nationalist Congress Party said Patel “unified the nation through his unwavering willpower, political acumen, and farsightedness to preserve the country’s unity and integrity after independence.” His ideals and contributions, it added, “will always remain an inspiration in the journey of nation-building. Humble salutations to India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “On the birth anniversary of the ‘Iron Man’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ji, I pay my respectful obeisance to him and extend my heartfelt best wishes to all fellow citizens on National Unity Day.”

The architect of Akhand Bharat, Sardar Patel ji, accomplished the great task of weaving the nation into a single thread through his indomitable courage, foresight, and national devotion, she added. “Let us all, inspired by the ideals of Sardar Patel ji, resolve to build a strong India and a developed India.”
