The police Monday arrested a history-sheeter in Bareilly for allegedly trying to extort Rs 10 lakh from Hapur superintendent of police (SP) Abhishek Verma. The accused had called the Hapur SP on February 28 and threatened to kill him and his family if his demand was not met. An FIR in this connection was lodged at Hapur Kotwali police station by Devendra Bisht, the PRO (public relations officer) of Hapur SP.
The accused has been identified as Rohit Saxena, against whom eight cases are pending at Bareilly’s Izatnagar police station. Several cases have also been filed against Saxena in Rampur and Moradabad districts in Uttar Pradesh and in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar.
“A police team from Hapur raided the house of Saxena Monday morning and arrested him. He is a hardened criminal against whom several cases including extortion, rape, and also murder have been lodged at various police stations in a few districts in UP and also in Uttarakhand. He was arrested a few months ago for misbehaving with cops in Bareilly,” said Arun Srivastava, in charge of the Izatnagar police station.
The police said the Hapur SP was posted as the deputy SP in Bareilly last year and he had arrested Saxena there in connection with a pending case. Saxena is a resident of the Rameshwaram colony in Bareilly.
“I had launched a crackdown against criminals during my posting in Bareilly and arrested Saxena. Why he threatened me and tried to extort money will become clear after his interrogation,” said Verma.
