Trump Tariffs LIVE Updates: 'Impose same amount of tariff on America, then they will understand': AAP Delhi President

AAP Delhi President Saurabh Bhardwaj criticised the US for imposing heavy tariffs on India, saying, “America is acting like a king and treating India as a guilty party by imposing penalties. When the US imposed a 125% tariff on China, China retaliated. But now, despite America imposing a 50% tariff on us, we are sitting quietly. We want to tell the Prime Minister that you are destroying the country’s self-respect. Impose the same tariff on America, then they will understand.”

Trump Tariffs LIVE Updates: Akhilesh flays Centre over US tariff move, seeks relief for exporters

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday hit out at the BJP-led Union government over the US tarrifs on Indian goods, saying its “failed" foreign and economic policies were hurting exporters, workers and artisans.

In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the Centre must extend timely support and relief to small, medium and micro-scale industries to prevent the already severe unemployment situation from worsening.

“Why should exporters, workers and craftsmen pay the price for the BJP government's failed foreign and economic policies? If the government can be generous towards billionaires, why not towards small, medium and micro enterprises? If assistance is not provided in time, the problem of unemployment — already grave — will become critical,” Yadav said.

Accusing the Centre of neglecting the interests of traders and manufacturers, he added, “If the BJP goes, trade will return.” He also posted a video of a news report on the plight of workers.

US President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, citing New Delhi's purchase of Russian crude oil, came into effect on Wednesday.

Trump Tariffs LIVE Updates: Provide two-yr moratorium for MSME, sops for exporters, Kamal Haasan tells govts

Makkal Needhi Maiam party founder Kamal Haasan has said that the US President Donald Trump government's 50 per cent tariff on Indian exporters was a challenge to the sovereignty of Indian livelihoods and both the Centre and state governments should come forward to provide immediate relief to exporters.

As an emergency breathing space, the governments could provide a two-year moratorium on MSME loan repayments, and a special emergency credit line. He suggested the governments to expand guarantee covers and restore low-interest export credit, and clear all pending GST, RODTEP, and RoSCTL refunds within strict deadlines; enhance rates for the hardest-hit export lines.

The Rajya Sabha MP said temporary power-tariff concessions, freight support to open new markets, and liberalised import norms for synthetic yarns could be provided and also a single-window fast track for export compliance and refunds.

Further, the country should identify and facilitate entry into new global markets for affected sectors, he emphasised.

"Let us not treat this merely as crisis management. This must be our clarion call for a decade-long mission to secure India's place in the supply chains of tomorrow; rare earths, semiconductors, batteries, power electronics, and advanced textiles," Haasan said in a statement here on Wednesday night. Only then will India be beyond the reach of tariffs and threats from across the oceans, he added.

"The 50 per cent US tariffs on our exporters is not about trade nor Ukraine. They are a political cudgel, aimed at shaking our resolve. When the sovereignty of Indian livelihoods is challenged, the nation must act together. I urge the Union and State governments to provide immediate relief," the MNM leader said.

Trump Tariffs LIVE Updates: India must impose higher tariffs on US imports, says AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal

While addressing a press conference, Aam Aadmi Party's national convener Arvind Kejriwal called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to impose higher tariffs on US imports, asserting that the entire nation will back the move.

“We demand that Modi ji restore the 11 per cent duty on cotton and ensure that cotton coming from America is taxed at 11 per cent," Kejriwal said.

"(US President) Trump is a coward. Trump has bowed before countries which have stood firmly against him. I don't know what compulsions PM Modi have that he is not saying anything. If Trump has imposed 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, we should have imposed 100 per cent tariff on American goods. Are we a weak nation? This is a country of 140 crore people. We have a huge market," he added.
