An Under Secretary deputed in the Law department of the Goa government died after his scooter was hit by a bus on the national highway in North Goa’s Guirim on Tuesday morning. Police said they have detained the bus driver. According to the police, the incident took place around 9:45 am when Narayan Abhyankar (51), a resident of Colvale, was on his way to work at the Secratariat on his two-wheeler. Police said he was going from Karaswada side towards Panaji on the highway, when a mini passenger bus, which was also headed to Panaji, came from the service road below and hit him. A police officer, requesting anonymity, said, “The motorist was crushed under the rear tyre of the bus. He suffered grievous injuries and died on the spot. The bus driver has been detained. In preliminary questioning, the bus driver said he did not spot the scooter, claiming there was a blind spot where the service road connects to the highway.” Police said a medical test will be conducted to check whether the bus driver was inebriated. The body was handed over to the victim’s family after the post-mortem and a case is being registered at Mapusa police station, added police. Abhyankar, a post graduate in law, was a Group ‘A’ officer in General Service. He is survived by his wife and three children. Sudhir Volvoikar, Joint Secretary (Law), said Abhyankar joined the administration as a legal assistant in September 2005 and rose through the ranks to become Superintendent in the Legal Department. He was promoted to the post of Under Secretary (Law) two years ago.
