Burglars grievously injured a person in their attempt to flee villagers in Tripura’s Khowai district on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, a Tripura Police officer informed that Dilip Biswas, 37, a resident of Paharmura, a village close to the India-Bangladesh international border, woke up from sleep after hearing a noise around 1.30 am on Monday.
“After peeking outside, he saw several scantily-clothed people trying to pry open the lock to his livestock shed. Thinking that the miscreants might attack him if he confronted them alone, he called up his neighbours over the phone and asked them to come to his house. Seeing villagers coming toward the house, the intruders fled from the spot.
“But the villagers caught up with them some 50-100 metre away and tried to stop them from escaping. Thereafter, a burglar attacked a villager with a machete and the gang escaped from the spot,” he said.
The police informed that one middle finger of the victim, Ranjit Biswas, 32, a neighbour of Dilip Biswas, has been completely severed, and he has also lost almost 70 per cent of his right ring finger.
Ranjit Biswas’s mobile phone, too, was damaged in the attack.
Meanwhile, the local police rushed to the spot and also alerted the Border Security Force (BSF).
However, no criminal involved in the incident was caught till the time of filing this report.
A few cases of cattle theft have been reported recently in Paharmura and Shingicherra areas of the Khowai district.
