The Tripura government on Monday opened four temporary fair-price shops selling onions and tomatoes in Agartala. It also started a similar counter at the Maharajganj Bazaar in the state capital.
The move came in the backdrop of skyrocketing tomato and onion prices in the last few weeks.
Speaking to reporters, a senior official said consumers can purchase onions at Rs 42 per kg and potatoes at Rs 35 per kg from these shops.
“In our counter, the rate of one kg of potato is Rs 35. However, we are charging Rs 100 if one buys three kgs of potato. The fair price shops will continue as long as the situation does not improve,” said the official.
He added that the government has plans to open more such shops.
Last year in August, similar onion fair price shops were opened to provide relief to consumers in the face of a steep price rise.
