(Photo: thrc.tripura.gov.in/)The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) recently took suo motu cognizance of media reports of three separate incidents of atrocities and directed the police to submit detailed reports on the cases within three weeks.
“…the Commission thought it appropriate to take cognizance of the incident and directs the DGP, Tripura to immediately inquire into the allegations and to submit a report to the Commission within 3 (three) weeks,” reads the THRC order issued on October 30.
Referring to the alleged stripping of a woman and the subsequent circulation of her photos on social media, the THRC said such an incident was bound to shock every common man in a civilised society.
In the case wherein local leaders allegedly forced a college girl to marry a youth in West Tripura district, the Commission denounced interference in the private lives of two adults.
Also, referring to media reports of ragging at Tripura Medical College (TMC), THRC ordered the principal to submit a detailed report on the incident in three weeks.
THRC also sought an independent inquiry into the incident by the district magistrate and the superintendent of police of the West Tripura district.
“Ragging is not only a criminal offence but it also violates the human rights of the ragged students. It calls for immediate action in terms of the Tripura Educational Institutions (Prevention of Ragging) Act, 1990,” reads the order.
