Nine days after a 21-year-old youth was allegedly assaulted by a group of miscreants, who also rubbed salt and chilli powder on his wounds, in the Tripura North district, the police arrested four of the accused persons on Friday.
The incident had happened at the Bir Bikram Institution playground in the Dharmanagar sub-division of the district.
Speaking to the media about the arrests, North Tripura Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty said, “It is a sad case. We immediately lodged an FIR and started an investigation. Four of the named persons have been arrested. The rest will be nabbed soon.”
The four arrested were identified as Koushik Datta, Tanmoy Debnath, Sumit Debnath and Govind Bhattacharjee. All of them were presented before the local judicial magistrate’s court.
Chakraborty added that the youth who was beaten up was accused of stealing a mobile phone. “However, local sources told us that Sagar Suklabaidya, a resident of the Chandrapur village, had proposed his love for a girl of the area, who happens to be the sister of one of the accused,” Chakraborty said.
Soon after the incident, the police had registered a case under Section 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 326 (criminalizes the act of voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (criminal intimidation) and section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code based on Suklabaidya’s statement registered at Dharmanagar police station.
