Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday lauded police for maintaining law and order, especially last year, when the state witnessed two major—Parliamentary and panchayat—elections, and said both polls were incident-free.
At a Police Week-2025 event at Arundhatinagar Police Line in Agartala, the chief minister, who also holds the home portfolio, said significant strides were made in reducing crime and maintaining peace. Citing National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, he noted a 19.3 per cent decline in the overall crime rate last year. Saha also mentioned the peace accord that led to the surrender of 1,173 ultras from the banned insurgent outfits National Liberation Front of Tripura and the All Tripura Tiger Force.
Saha also said the law and order situation had significantly improved since the Left rule in the state. In another major achievement, the chief minister noted a significant dip in road accidents, from 716 in 2015 to 578 in 2024, despite a 170 per cent rise in the number of vehicles on the roads.
On the front of combating illegal drugs, Saha said that 1,666 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in the last three years (2022-24), with 2,697 arrests made. Among these, 470 cases were registered and 886 people were arrested last year.
Saha highlighted that 1.64 crore cannabis plants were destroyed in 2024 as part of the Government’s Nasha Mukt Abhiyan, with 133 per cent more cannabis plants destroyed last year compared to 2023.
Cases lodged against Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya increased by 238 per cent last year, with arrests in such cases rising by 344 per cent. Cases against touts or human traffickers also increased sevenfold last year, according to state police data.
