The Telangana police on Sunday said it has been asked by the state Congress chief A Revanth Reddy to make security arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony on December 4 or 9. What did Congress do right in Telangana? The nearly 10-year-old rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) came to an end on Sunday with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao tendering his resignation from his post. BRS has been ruling the state since 2014, when Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh. Identifying Revanth Reddy as a key figure early on, settling intra-party frictions, cashing in on Karnataka, countering BRS schemes, and painting BRS-BJP-AIMIM as partners have paid off for the party, writes Manoj C G.

The Congress is at the helm in Telangana for the first time since its formation, winning 65 seats through an aggressive campaign that cashed in on the anti-incumbency against the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). However, it failed to win a single seat among the 24 in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
The BRS won 16 of these seats and the All India Majlis-e-ittehadul Muslimeen repeated its 2018 tally and won seven seats in its citadel of “Old City”. The BJP’s controversial leader T Raja Singh retained Goshamahal — the only seat the party had won in 2018.

Unlike in 2018, the signs of the changing political landscape in Telangana in 2023 could be seen in the waning support for the ruling Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS). This decline in popularity was particularly noticeable in the increasing detachment of the people from several BRS MLAs, who seemed to have lost their credibility. The desire for “change” was a familiar theme throughout Telangana, manifesting in various expressions and forms. This self-generating anti-BRS momentum led to a shift in public opinion, with the Congress party emerging as a strong alternative.
This change signifies a move away from the deeply rooted regional and cultural identity that once defined Telangana’s politics, marking a shift in the state’s political narrative. In other words, the electoral triumph of Congress and the enhanced performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will change the landscape of regional party politics in India. (Read more)
