The Telangana police on Sunday said it has been asked by the state Congress chief A Revanth Reddy to make security arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony on December 4 or 9. Reddy informed the DGP that several chief ministers, former chief ministers besides senior leaders from Delhi would participate in the swearing-in ceremony and the event will be held at LB stadium.

What did Congress do right in Telangana? The nearly 10-year-old rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) came to an end on Sunday with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao tendering his resignation from his post. BRS has been ruling the state since 2014, when Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh. Identifying Revanth Reddy as a key figure early on, settling intra-party frictions, cashing in on Karnataka, countering BRS schemes, and painting BRS-BJP-AIMIM as partners have paid off for the party, writes Manoj C G.

After his party’s Telangana drubbing, Pawan Kalyan Andhra plans may see change

Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (JSP), which contested the Telangana Assembly elections in alliance with the BJP, failed to make a mark, with all its eight candidates losing their deposits.

The BJP, which managed to double its vote share from around 6% in 2018 to about 14%, was banking on the JSP to use its “Andhra card” to target the “settler” population, especially in urban areas of the state.

BRS holds onto Hyderabad urban base, Congress draws a blank

The Congress is at the helm in Telangana for the first time since its formation, winning 65 seats through an aggressive campaign that cashed in on the anti-incumbency against the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). However, it failed to win a single seat among the 24 in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

Telangana election results: Congress MLAs who defected to BRS in 2019 bite the dust

Ten of the 12 Congress MLAs defected to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (now, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi) in June 2019, causing a major embarrassment to Congress and reducing its strength in the Telangana Assembly, have lost in this election. Their defection led to the Congress losing the status of main Opposition and second-largest party in the House, leaving party leaders seething.

Who is Telangana BJP’s ‘double giant killer’ Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy?

Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy – the name was relatively unknown outside Kamareddy till the BJP announced him as a candidate against K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Revanth Reddy of the Congress.

Ramana Reddy, who dedicated his victory to the people of Kamareddy, began his political journey with the Congress.

BJP IT department head Amit Malviya took to X to congratulate Ramana Reddy. “Meet BJP’s Katipally Venkata Ramana, the giant slayer of these elections, who defeated both sitting CM KCR and incoming (hopefully) CM Revanth Reddy, from Kamareddy in Telangana. In Congress’s Telangana victory, a warning for regional parties

Unlike in 2018, the signs of the changing political landscape in Telangana in 2023 could be seen in the waning support for the ruling Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS). This decline in popularity was particularly noticeable in the increasing detachment of the people from several BRS MLAs, who seemed to have lost their credibility. The desire for “change” was a familiar theme throughout Telangana, manifesting in various expressions and forms. This self-generating anti-BRS momentum led to a shift in public opinion, with the Congress party emerging as a strong alternative.

This change signifies a move away from the deeply rooted regional and cultural identity that once defined Telangana’s politics, marking a shift in the state’s political narrative. In other words, the electoral triumph of Congress and the enhanced performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will change the landscape of regional party politics in India. (Read more)

In the wee hours before Telangana voted, a wave of a different kind from Andhra side

In the wee hours of November 30, hours before voting for the Telangana Assembly elections was to begin, a large contingent of around 500 armed personnel of the Andhra Pradesh Police bulldozed a gate of the Nagarjuna Sagar dam on the Krishna river, which flows between the two states, occupied the dam infrastructure and released water from the reservoir towards Andhra Pradesh.

As the Telangana Police in Nalgonda district registered a case against Andhra police personnel for allegedly trespassing on the dam, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief A Revanth Reddy put a political spin on the incident, claiming that it was “staged” to rouse the sentiments of Telangana voters ahead of polling. “The BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) did this drama to stoke sentiments of Telangana voters, by trying to show that only KCR (Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao) can protect the state,” Reddy said.

ONCE IT was the hotbed of the Telangana statehood agitation. Now, Osmania University is unanimous that it is time to put it behind as an electoral issue, and focus on a more pressing concern: jobs.

Towards the last leg of the statehood agitation, between 2009 and 2014, the students of the university had spearheaded a chain of protests and mobilised support, with the pressure finally leading to the UPA-II government passing the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill in January 2014.

In the elections held months later, K Chandrashekar Rao, the most visible face of the Telangana movement, was voted to power and has been the Chief Minister since. However, on the campus, the nostalgia about KCR’s role in the agitation has waned, with student distress rising over the frequently cancelled government recruitment exams, the creeping maximum age limit for many of these, the lack of jobs, the “shrinking space” for dissent, as well as the state of the university’s infrastructure.
