IN THE aftermath of India’s T20 World Cup triumph, which ended a 13-year wait for an ICC trophy, there can be no one better than Jasprit Bumrah, who repeatedly bailed them out of mini-crises, to trace the arc of the team through his own journey to become the best fast bowler in world cricket.

It is Bumrah’s story that best captures how Indian cricket democratised itself to become world-beaters. He isn’t from a traditionally strong cricketing base, he doesn’t possess a conventional bowling action, he doesn’t have a long run-up, and  he didn’t have any godfather entrenched in the system. Born to a Punjab-Sikh family, he grew up in a middle-class environment in Ahmedabad and learnt the nuances of the game on his own, watching television.

Luckily, unlike the distant past where such talents from untraditional centres were likely to fall through the cracks in the system, his talent was spotted and allowed to grow. Self-taught, self-made, there has been no greater fast bowler in India ever. Bumrah was adjudged player of the tournament at the T20 World Cup, which the Indian team won last month.

On Thursday, Bumrah will be the guest at the Express Adda in his hometown Ahmedabad. He will be in conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director, The Indian Express Group, and Sandeep Dwivedi, National Sports Editor, The Indian Express.

Bumrah’s dominance is highlighted by the respect and admiration he has gained from fast bowling legends around the world, from the great West Indian Andy Roberts to Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, who recently joked that the only way to stop Bumrah from wreaking havoc is to steal his boots.

Much will depend on Bumrah if India are to achieve their goals of winning the Test championship and the ODI World Cup in the near future.

The Express Adda is a series of informal interactions organised by The Indian Express Group and features those at the centre of change. Previous guests at the Adda include External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, Union Housing and Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, chess legend Viswanathan Anand, Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and motivational strategist Gaur Gopal Das.
