(Photo: Express/file)The Supreme Court Tuesday extended the time for completing trial in the sexual assault case against former Editor of Tehelka magazine Tarun Tejpal till March 31.
A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and M R Shah extended the time till March 31, 2021 following requests made by the trial court Judge hearing the matter and the Goa government.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta brought the trial judge’s request to the notice of the bench.
Tejpal’s counsel Senior advocate Kapil Sibal however pointed out that the SC had already extended the time till December 31 and the bench may put up the matter for hearing in last week of December or in January.
But the bench agreed that it will be difficult to wind up trial by December end as there were still witnesses left to be examined.
The trial court in Mapusa town of Goa had framed charges against Tejpal under various sections of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the complaint by a former woman colleague.
Tejpal is alleged to have sexually assaulted a former woman colleague inside an elevator of a five-star hotel in Goa in 2013. He has denied the allegations levelled against him. He is currently on bail.
