File photoAn Indian Army soldier was killed as troops foiled an infiltration bid by militants from across the Line of Control (LOC) in the early hours of Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said.
Jammu-based Army PRO Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal said, “Alert troops foiled an infiltration bid by effectively engaging infiltrating terrorists with effective fire in the Battal Sector at 3 am”.
During the heavy gunfight in Krishna Ghati area, Bartwal said, a soldier was injured. According to sources, the injured soldier was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, search operations were ongoing, Bartwal said.
This comes a day after a militant was killed and a soldier and a civilian sustained minor injuries in a gunfight between Army personnel and militants in Rajouri district. A group of militants fired on the house of Parshotam Kumar, a village defence guard (VDG) who was recently decorated, in Rajouri’s Ghunda Khawas village early Monday.
There has been a surge in militant activities in Jammu and the security establishment has often been the target. Militants have carried out several attacks on security forces, police and civilians, in the last three months during which at least 10 security personnel, including two officers and seven pilgrims, have been killed.
