The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed AAP national convenor and Delhi former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case filed over his remarks about the educational degrees of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice S V N Bhatti pointed out that it had already rejected a similar plea by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who is also a co-accused in the case, on April 8, 2024.

“…Bearing in mind the said decision… in the related matter of a person facing the same proceeding, we are disinclined to entertain this matter. The special leave petition is accordingly dismissed,” the court said. The bench, however, clarified, “We have not pronounced on the merit of the contention of either side and all contentions are left open.”

The two AAP leaders are facing a criminal defamation case filed by Gujarat University over their “sarcastic” and “derogatory” comments made in connection with Modi’s educational degrees.
