Woman attempts suicide after husband humiliated by panchayat

A woman allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison after her husband was humiliated by a community panchayat for entering into a house in a suspicious manner.

A woman allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison after her husband was humiliated by a community panchayat for entering into a house in a suspicious manner in Rajasthan’s Sriganganagr district.

Mahesh entered into a village house under Vijay Nagar police station circle on the night of June 22. When he was coming out of the house,a man saw him and informed the house owner.

Next day,a community panchayat was convened where he confessed to have gone into the house. He said that he had gone to meet a girl following which village seniors humiliated him.

Mahesh was forced by the village elders to take a round of the village with a basket of shoes on his head as a punishment.

Disturbed over the sequence of events,23-year-old Suman,Mahesh’s wife,consumed poison on June 26. She was later hospitalised in Raisingh Nagar where her condition is said to be out of danger,the police said today.

“We received a complaint on June 26 and the FIR was lodged yesterday with Vijay Nagar police station. We have rounded up two persons in this connection and others accused will also be taken into custody,” Circle Officer Raisingh Nagar Ramkishan Songara said,adding that the village Sarpanch Shailendras Singh is also one of the accused.
