The death toll in rain-related incidents in Andhra Pradesh shot up to 20 and 26,000 people were evacuated to safer places as rains continued to sweep coastal and Rayalseema regions of the state.
Chief Minister K Rosaiah,immediately after returning from Delhi,tonight reviewed the situation in the rain — affected districts with Revenue Minister D Prasada Rao and senior officials and directed distribution of relief to the people on war footing.
With heavy rains continue to lash many districts in Coastal and Rayalseema regions of the state for the last three days,20 persons lost their lives in rain-related incidents,Disaster Management Department officials said.
Six deaths each were reported from Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts,two each in Nellore,Prakasam,Anantapur districts while one death each was reported from West Godavari and Chittoor districts,they said.
Six persons went missing in different parts of coastal districts of the state. Besides,heavy rains also damaged standing crops,particularly paddy,in 2.73 lakh hectares and horticulture crops in over 4,000 hectares,they said.
Over 26,000 people have been evacuated to safer places as 228 mandals were severely affected by the rains caused by the low depression in the Bay of Bengal and the onset of northeast monsoon.
