Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday said salary and pension bills of legislators in the state have increased from Rs 7,896 crore in 2008-2009 to Rs 14,740 crore at present.
“While the salary bill 2001-2002 was of the order of about Rs 3,591 crore it jumped to Rs 7896 crore in 2008-2009 and is touching Rs 14,740 crore at present,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah told the Legislative Assembly while speaking on a bill to hike the salaries of former and present Legislators.
Stressing on the necessity of a mechanism for enhancing salaries of legislators under a set formula,he said,”We should have a procedure in place like that of pay commissions government employees… under which the matter of enhancement of salaries will be settled in a transparent manner taking experts on board for opinion.”
Intervening in the discussion on the bill tabled by Law Minister,Omar said government kept the issue pending for a long time with the purpose to first meet demands of government employees for implementation of Sixth Pay Commission.
“For the constant upward trend in price index and the pressing demand for enhancing the salaries of the legislators government introduced a bill to accommodate the demands at least moderately,if not to the full extend,” he said.
The demand of the House for fixing the salary of a legislator at Rs one lakh per month could not be accommodated fully for lack of resources,he said.
