A police constable was on Tuesday taken hostage twice by a mob but released unharmed following the intervention of local elders in Pattan area of Baramulla district, official sources said.
Constable Imtiaz Ahmad,a resident of Dooru village in Sopore, was on his way to his posting at Khag area in Budgam district when a mob intercepted him at Palhallan,30 kms from here, they said.
The mob was protesting against the yesterday’s killing of four persons when security forces allegedly opened fire on a stone-pelting mob.
Ahmad, who was not in his uniform, was taken hostage by the mob as soon as they found his police identity card, they said, adding he was released after several hours following intervention by local elders.
However, the policeman was in trouble again as he was detained by another group of protestors less than a kilometre from Palhalan.
Ahmad spent another hour in captivity before some local elders brought him to Pattan police station where he was handed over to the station house officer.
Policemen have been at the receiving end of stone-pelting mobs in Kashmir Valley since the fresh unrest began in June.
Many of them carry fake identity cards to escape the wrath of these mobs.
