Suspected militants shot at and critically injured a policeman near holy Hazratbal shrine on the outskirts of the city,official sources said.

Constable Sajjad Ahmad of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) was on duty at Hazratbal bus stand when unidentified pistol-borne persons shot him in the head,the sources said.

They said Ahmad was shifted to nearby Soura Medical Institute where his condition was stated to be “critical”.

The militants struck in the Hazratbal area when it was heavily crowded with thousands of devotees returning to their homes after offering Friday prayers at the shrine.

Police and paramilitary forces rushed to the scene and launched a hunt to nab the assailants.

No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the incident,which created panic in the area.
