The main Opposition Peoples Democratic Party today flayed the National Conference for demanding a ban on the entry of rights’ activists into Jammu and Kashmir, claiming that the state government had “exposed itself in the process”.

“Even though the Omar Abdullah government needed no such recommendation for implementing its draconian agenda, the NC had fully exposed itself in the process,” PDP chief spokesperson Naeem akhtar said in a statement here.

Akhtar was reacting to the NC¿s demand that people like Arundhati Roy,Ram Jethmalani and Gautam Naulakha should be barred from entering the state.

“The government has already brought itself the shame of banishing Naulakha and his associate from the state and the NC noise only confirms what everybody knew about the party¿s intolerance and undemocratic demeanour,” he said.

He asserted,“Kashmir is nobody¿s personal jageer (fiefdom) that people could come and go only according to somebody¿s likings or dislikes.” The spokesman said the demand by the NC is an indicator of the actual unpleasant realities of Kashmir.

“Never in the past two decades had a government felt threatened from writers, journalists and civil liberty champions so as to ban or extern them,” he added.
