Oriya to be official language in Orissa

About two-and-half decades after a proposal was made to make Oriya the official langugage,the Orissa government has taken a formal decision to implement it in a phased manner.

About two-and-half decades after a proposal was made to make Oriya the official langugage,the Orissa government has taken a formal decision to implement it in a phased manner.

The process began on the New Year’s day at panchayat and block levels and would be extended to the state level in due course,Chief Secretary T K Mishra said after a meeting chaired by him at the state secretariat here on Saturday.

A committee headed by Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) has been constituted to look into aspects including proper implementation of the language in official work.

Other matters to be taken up by the committee,which comprise secretaries in the departments of IT,panchayat raj and revenue are simplification of the Oriya language,re-printng of the Oriya dictionary,preparation of an official dictionary,a special software for use of Oriya in computers and training to employees.

Government orders in the state would,however,be issued both in Oriya and English,Mishra said.

Another committee would be constituted to be headed by the law department to take care of the legal aspects of the new law,he said.
