Omar calls for afforestation drive in J-K

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for a massive afforestation drive in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for a massive afforestation drive in Jammu and Kashmir, terming greenery significant for the ecology and beauty of the state famous for tourism.

“We have to rejuvenate our green wealth and retrieve degraded forests to safeguard the future of coming generations,” Omar said while addressing a public meeting in Shopian district,55 kms from here,on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister said erratic changes in the climate, witnessed during recent years, were due to heavy damage inflicted upon the rich forest wealth in the State.

“We have to girdle loins to launch afforestation programme with enthusiasm and realise it successfully as a mission,” he said.

Omar said people living nearer to the forests have added responsibility in protecting and preserving the green wealth.

He said forests not only maintain climate and ecology, but also rainfall which has direct effect on sustenance of agro-based economy and food production.

The Chief Minister stressed on involving students in afforestation programme and awareness strategies. “This would not only inculcate in them the necessary love for bio-diversity of the state, but help to widen awareness in general people regarding importance of planting trees and protecting these for posterity.”

“The programme of retrieving degraded forest in the area by launching afforestation drive was a good step in this direction,” Omar said.

He said in order to reduce the pressure on forests of the state on account of timber production for local use,the government would provide all assistance for promotion of trade and business of timber import.

“The government would encourage those who want to venture in the import of timber for its sale and supply in the state,” he added.
