Kerala cabinet skips discussion on Gavai’s nod in graft case

Kerala cabinet skipped discussion on the issue of Governor Gavai granting sanction to CBI to prosecute Pinarayi Vijayan in a graft case.

The Kerala cabinet on Wednesday skipped discussion on the issue of Governor R S Gavai granting sanction to CBI to prosecute CPI(M) state Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan in a graft case.

This is seen as a move to avoid further sharpening of intra-party differences ahead of the party’s top policy making body’s meeting.

A copy of Governor’s letter on sanction was circulated among the ministers at the cabinet meeting last week and it was agreed that the issue would be discussed today.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters that the matter did not figure in today’s meeting.

Party sources said discussion was deferred as the CPI(M) politburo and the Central Committee meeting this weekend are expected to formulate the official line on the issue.

In its chargesheet filed before a court last week,CBI has named former power minister Vijayan as an accused along with eight others in the 1998 graft case relating to alleged irregularities in awarding contracts to renovate three power projects to Canadian firm SNC Lavalin.

Refusing to toe the CPI(M)’s official position that Gavai’s action was politically motivated,Achuthanandan has maintained that Governors have discretionary powers to take decision in such cases and the sanction did not come as a great surprise.
