Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra today called for close coordination between the research and extension agencies to make the state fully self-reliant in agriculture and allied sectors by 2015. Close coordination between research and extension agencies is needed to effectively transfer new techniques and know-how from laboratory to land,so as to make the state self-reliant in agriculture and allied sectors within next 3-4 years, Vohra said. The governor was speaking at the launch of Organic Agriculture Programme at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir. Vohra,who is also the Chancellor of the University,said all the regions of the state have vast potential and tremendous opportunities for enhancing agri-productivity and production. Transformation in this sector could have a cascading effect for greater economic activity and employment opportunities, he said. Vohra called for taking optimal benefits from varied climatic zones by taking area specific initiatives in farm,horticulture,forestry,agriculture,floriculture,mushroom cultivation,dairy farming,poultry,sheep and husbandry by utilising available scientific knowledge and adopting improved techniques. He said that this would help make the state prosperous in the next few years,without having to make huge investments. Vohra said the Agriculture Universities of the State have to play a crucial role in securing the desired results. The Governor released two publications brought out by the University on the occasion.
